Helane Morrison: Heading the Enforcement of Corporate Compliance
A Compliance Officer as a career hasn’t been around very long. Until recently, attorneys, auditors and risk assessors were the “Compliance Officers”. Now that state and federal regulations have put more demands on businesses and professionals to comply, Compliance Officers are now necessary worldwide.
Since the need for enforcement on Corporate Compliance has become a necessity, we can look towards Helane Morrison to head the world in the right direction. She has become the face or Corporate Compliance. She is the Chief Compliance Officer of the Corporate Compliance Program.
Helane Morrison began her career in Journalism at Northwestern University and obtained her Law Degree at University of California, Berkeley School of Law. She worked for Howard, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk and Rabkin as a Title Associate and then later she became Partner of the firm. She gained her experience in Corporate Compliance starting at the San Francisco Office, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as an Assistant District Administrator in enforcement, which then provided her an excellent role as the Title District Administrator. The last decade, Ms. Morrison has worked for Hall Capital Partners, LLC and her title is General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer. She has been honored for being one of the Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business and Public Sector 3 times.
Helane Morrison‘s career began through education and later gained the experience of Corporate Compliance through employment. At the beginning of her career, access to a formal Corporate Compliance degree was non-existent.
The profession is growing and more universities are creating formal degrees domestically and internationally. The education received will help create a well rounded individual to learn how to help prevent problems, find issues and fix any ethical or regulatory problems. To become a Compliance Officer, a person will need some technical and people skills and need to be able to portray a leadership role in their work.
The banking, insurance and gaming industry are one of the more regulated businesses that are in need of a Compliance Officer. Things that have gone unnoticed or unchanged for years are now being brought to light due to the tighter regulations. These Compliance Officers are there to help companies make sure all the rules are being followed and employees are not making mistakes that can cost business’s financial damages.
