According to a new poll which was commissioned by End Citizens United, 61% of citizens want an independent investigation into Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 Presidential election. The poll, which was conducted by PPP, also shows that a large majority of citizens in the United States oppose the firing of FBI Director James Comey that President Trump signed off on.
Tiffany Muller is the Executive Director and President of the PAC End Citizens United. She said that people’s faith in government has reached an all-time low after the election and most believe that the election results were swayed by Russia and fake news. Trump firing the person who was investigating him and his ties to Russia has alarmed people throughout the country and has people demanding that a special prosecutor is appointed who can conduct an independent investigation into the allegations.
End Citizens United is a political action committee (PAC) which has focused on the Supreme Court ruling that allows people and businesses to spend as much as they want on political campaigns. The ruling stated that corporations are people and also that putting restrictions on what people can donate to political campaigns is a restraint on their free speech. The inevitable outcome of this ruling is that politics has now become engaged in limitless spending by rich corporations and wealthy individuals.
Most people today feel that the system is rigged against them by corporations and rich people who have bought a say in what happens in government. Many people, especially Democrats, are also deeply disturbed and angry about the election of Donald Trump who has already grievously harmed the nation through his policies and executive orders. People have been looking for a way to fight back and once again have some say in the laws and regulations of the United States.
End Citizens United became a PAC before the last presidential election cycle and its mission is to find a way to once again limit the amount of money awash in the political process. They donate to candidates who are committed to campaign finance reform through legislation as well as an eventual constitutional amendment to limit how much anyone can spend on a political campaign which will restore balance to our system of government.
In the 2016 election cycle, End Citizens United took in $25 million from grassroots donations. In just the first three months of 2017 more than $4 million was raised by the PAC and they are expecting to raise at least $35 million for the 2018 midterm elections. This money is being raised from hundreds of thousands of people across the country with the average donation being $12. People have decided that enough is enough and they want to fight back.
